The Open Championship moves to the second round on Friday at the Royal Birkdale. It will be a long day in the links on the English coast, with some players jockeying for the top position on the British Open leaderboard and others struggling not to miss the cut.

In The 2017 British Open, the top 70 players in the field (more ties) survive to play beyond the 36 holes. How many takes a player sits out of the lead does not matter, as long as he is within the 70 places of classification of the type that leads the group. That makes for some interesting head-to-head competition in the middle of the pack, because the players on the strip are those who set the cut. It is different from tournaments where the cut is determined by a specific deficit. Somehow, it can make Fridays more fun.

Birkdale is not so long, a par-70 who is playing this week at 7,156 yards. But strong winds can visit the terrain, and the fairways are as narrow as they are flat. Not an easy place to play. When Padraig Harrington won The Open nine years ago, he did it with a score of 3 more.
What the players appreciate about Birkdale is its impartiality.
"You get much more consistent rebounds, so well-received hits are rewarded and usually end where you anticipate," says Phil Mickelson.
